Incorporating Racial Justice Principles into Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Supervision

This presentation by Monique Bowen, PhD, will identify a series of common clinical training dilemmas associated with race-based bias, discrimination, hatred, and prejudice. The presenter will use these examples to explore racial legacies in clinical supervisory relationships that are often shared/passed down in training settings. There will be ample time for discussion after the presentation.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify three common training dilemmas that represent racial enactment within the supervisor-supervisee dyad.

  2. Participants will re-state two policy engagements to counteract internal ized or interpersonal racism at the level of the supervisor/supervisee relationship

  3. Participants will describe one approach to undoing institutional racism at the level of the trainee/institutional intersection.

  4. Participants will identify one planned on being/becoming racially literate within one’s own evolving clinical and social context(s).

Target audience: this educational activity is designed for Physicians, Psychologists, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and other Mental-Health Professionals.

Accreditation: The Psychiatric Clinical Faculty Association (PCFA) is accredited by the California Medical Association (CMA) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the CMA. PCFA designates this activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This activity meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
